One thing that we do in our combined delivery programs is have them create what we call a working agreement. They have an activity to complete before they come to class to think of three things they each want to experience in the class – essentially what kind of environment they want. Usually it’s things like “respect” or “kindness” or “inclusiveness”.
Then in the actual session everyone lists them out, and the qualities with the most votes get written/typed up by someone in the class and disseminated to everyone.
Throughout the year, the instructor can point to this working agreement if someone isn’t adhering to it. This way the students buy into it a bit more because they had a hand in creating it rather than having it dictated to them. It has been a very powerful tool.
